The Shwe Settaw Golden Deer Sanctuary has been opened for the public who visit Shwe Settaw Pagoda Festival in Minbu Township, Minbu District, Magway Region, said a spokesperson of the Township Fisheries Department.
Wardens were appointed at the sanctuary which is located beside the entrance road to the pagoda in order to explain the golden deer and the sanctuary to the visitors.
“The sanctuary keeps nine male golden deer, nine female golden deer and one muntjac of last year plus two new-born golden deer and one more golden deer which came from Pwintbyu Township. Arrangements have been made for enabling the pilgrims and people to visit the sanctuary,” said Head of Minbu Township Forest Department U Hla Htay.
Staff members were assigned to nurture the golden deer. Veterinarians of Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department give medical treatment to the deer.
“The deer being kept at the sanctuary are golden deer species which were born in Shwe Settaw wildlife sanctuary. The Forest Department breeds them because some people illegally killed the golden deer,” said an official.
The Forest Department prohibits illegal hunting and killing the golden deer in the Shwe Settaw Sanctuary under the law.
