Yangon August 12
The visa-free agreement to Thai tourists entering Myanmar is to come into effect on 11 August, Thai’s local media reported.
The SAMUI Times online newspaper report quoted Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs saying that the visa-free travel agreement for ordinary Thai passport holders visiting Myanmar on tourism purposes, will come into effect at midnight tonight, or 00:00am of 11 August 2015.
Thailand and Myanmar signed an agreement last month allowing passport holders of both countries to make free visa visits of up to 14 days, will be effective in September for air arrivals, while exemption at border crossings will go into effect early next year.
The visa exemption agreement will only be valid to individuals entering Myanmar by air, and only to those disembarking at one of the three international airports including Naypyitaw, Yangon, or Mandalay.
The agreement is aimed at boosting ties between the two countries, especially in tourism and trade, reported Thai’s local state-run media.
Myanmar passport holders can already enter six other ASEAN countries without a visa: Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines and Brunei.
