Senior General Min Aung Hlaing calls on Thai PM General Prayuth Chan-o-Cha

Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, currently in Thailand on a goodwill visit, went to the Thai government office at 2 pm local standard time today and met Thai Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-o-Cha.

The Senior General was accompanied by the Myanmar delegation members, Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand U Win Maung and Myanmar Military Attaché (Army Navy and Air) Brig-Gen Chit Swe. Present at the meeting together with the Thai Prime Minister were Chief of Defence Forces of the Royal Thai Armed Forces General Sommai Kaotira and senior military officers. 

The Thai Prime Minister said he heartily welcomed the Senior General on behalf of the Thai government, the Thai people and the former Thai military personnel. The Senior General said their cordial talks were indicative of the amicable friendship between the two countries. Thailand rendered assistance to Myanmar in its political transition. As the government has changed, the Tatmadaw is also conducting necessary reforms. In doing so, it has plans to provide accommodation for war veterans. Therefore, the Senior General said, he has planned to study  the development tasks being carried out by the Royal Thai Armed Forces. The Senior General expressed thanks to the Thai government for protecting both documented and undocumented Myanmar migrant workers within the framework of law, adding that he believes the government would continue protection of them.

The Thai Prime Minister said his country will cooperate with Myanmar in economic and social affairs. The Thai government will not intervene in Myanmar’s internal affairs. However, it will collaborate in the issues of internal peace, elimination of illegal trade, arms smuggling and narcotic drugs, investment, culture and tourism.

In his discussion, the Senior General said when it comes to the peace issue, Myanmar is trying to end internal armed conflicts. Smuggling out a country’s natural resources affects that country only, but illicit drug trafficking can affect all the regional countries. So, cooperation is necessary to ensure that the armed groups relying on such drug trafficking do not exist and wipe out the armed conflicts, said the Senior General.

The Thai Prime Minister expressed his willingness to cooperate in medical services and regional peace and stability. The issue of Myanmar workers will be dealt with in accord with the law. 

Regarding the two Myanmar citizens involved in the Koh Tao murder case, he said as it is concerned with the third country, (concerned authorities) have been let to studyand review the real situation.

After the discussion, the Senior General and the Thai Prime Minister exchanged souvenirs and posed for documentary photo together with the dignitaries in presence.
