Nay Pyi Taw June 28

The Tatmadaw is carrying out only the national political task. It is doing its best and applying the most unproblematic approach in settling the conflict in Rakhine State. But the exaggerations of certain groups and media have put the Government and the Tatmadaw under wrong international impression, said Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at his meeting with Ambassador of Germany to Myanmar H.E. Mr. Christian-Ludwig Weber-Lortsch, who had completed his tour of duty in Myanmar, at Zeyathiri Parlour here at 2 pm yesterday.

Also present at the meeting together with the Senior General were Lt-Gen Soe Htut of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) and senior military officers. The German Ambassador was accompanied by the embassy officials.

First, the German Ambassador said Myanmar and Germany have a long history of relations. Currently, the two countries are exchanging goodwill visits to enhance defence cooperation. He served duties in Myanmar during the time the country was in the favourable process of national reconciliation. The German Ambassador added that the German government was aware of the important role the Tatmadaw in the path of ongoing multi-party democracy in Myanmar; and that it is also helping to reduce the EU’s sanctions against the country; and that he knew that some organizations and media were making mountains out of molehills regarding the Rakhine issue; and that German government would investigate the October, 2016 attacks in Rakhine State’s Maungtaw, find out the truth and help resolve some countries’ misunderstanding of Myanmar.

The Senior General said that the Tatmadaw was ensuring its actions do not leave negative impression to Myanmar people as well as neighboring and international countries. Though the main responsibility of the Tatmadaw is national defence, it is also assuming the responsibility of national politics by stabilizing and strengthening the country’s steps on multi-party democracy path. Regarding the problems in Rakhine State, the Tatmadaw was resolving as much as it could to minimize the impact. However, there is misunderstanding of the Tatmadaw due to exaggeration by some organizations and media. The Tatmadaw was doing as much as it could though the way violence is addressed may differ from one to another country, he said. Open and cordial discussion were made while the Myanmar delegation called on the German chief of staff and the deputy foreign affairs minister during a goodwill visit to Germany. At present, Bengali terrorists in Rakhine State are arresting and killing local people, attacking security forces and undergoing secret military training. As to the ethnic armed problem, some ethnic armed groups do not want to lay down their arms though they are willing to achieve peace. Myanmar is on the track to multi-party democracy and there must be a single Tatmadaw in the country, said the Senior General.

Then, both sides cordially exchanged viewed on the Tatmadaw’s participation in Myanmar’s lasting peace efforts, promotion of non-military defence cooperation between Myanmar and Germany and German assistance in Myanmar’s political reform. After the meeting, the Senior General presented a gift to the German Ambassador and posed for a documentary photo together with those present.
