‘‘ Myanmar will export 40 tons of honey to China and Thailand via the Muse 105th mile border trade camp in coming March,’’ said U Hla Htoo Aung, assistant director of the Ministry of Commerce.
Since few years, foreign countries have been importing honey from Myanmar in order to use it as a substitute of sugar in the production of medicine.
"China and Thailand want to import honey as its quality is good. Plans are under way to export many tons of honey to both countries in the future," he added.
Myanmar is set to export 4,000 tons of honey in 2016-2017 FY. In late December, 50 tons of honey were exported to Thailand. In addition to Thailand and China, honey will be exported to other countries to meet the set target. Local honey gets a good price.
Myanmar exported 2,490 tons of honey in 2013-2014 FY; 3,551 tons in 2014-2015 FY; and 2,553 tons in 2015-2016 FY.
There are more than 150,000 commercial bee keeping farms across the country. The annual honey production is 4,500 tons. Most of local people use honey for medicine. Myanmar mainly exports honey via the Muse 105th mile border trade camp.
