All-round development project of Meikhtila Lake to be launched as of 2016

Yangon, September 14

Meikhtila Lake, an oasis amid the arid plains of Upper Myanmar, is 11km (7 miles) long and 0.8km (0.5 miles) wide. It is a man-made irrigation and water reservoir, split into north and south parts.

Now, Myanmar in combination with Netherlands is planning to launch the project for the all-round development of Meikhtila Lake (Above) as of 2016 according to the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry.

We choose Meikhtila Lake as a project area because the water from Meikhtila Lake covers the whole of watershed boundary. Also, the lake has the larger area to effectively use the fund of the project. Therefore, we choose it, said a responsible person from the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry.

The all-round development project of Meikhtila Lake is one of six water resource management projects which will be implemented by Myanmar in cooperation with Netherlands.

This project is mainly aimed to develop watershed management system, to collectively work between government departments and the public, to control water quality and to protect water pollution, to provide enough water to agriculture industries, to provide adequate drinking water to the rural and urban societies, and to decrease the silting in the lake according the report.
