Yangon April 10
Korea has expressed an interest to import mushrooms from Myanmar, according to Myanmar Mushroom Growers and Exporters Association.
With tourism boom in the country, more and more foreign tourists are visiting Myanmar and one of their favorite foods—mushroom—is in rising demand.
Carried by foreign tourists, the good news about the delicious taste of Myanmar mushrooms have spread beyond the country’s boundary, arousing the interest of Korean businessmen.
Kyaw Zin, a commercial mushroom grower in Nat Sin Gon Village in Kawhmu Township, said Korean businessmen are discussing with Myanmar Mushroom Growers and Exporters Association about importation of Myanmar’s mushrooms.
Korea is one of the biggest mushroom consumers in the world and also the world’s largest mush importer. At present, the association is holding discussion with Korean businessmen to study the feasibility of growing Korean’s favorite mushroom species in Myanmar for export.
Previously, mushroom markets existed only at Thiri Mingalar Market and Thanzay Market. But now, there have been mushroom retailing markets in sub-urban areas of Yangon. The price has also upped from 1500 kyats to 2000-4000 kyats.
The Mushroom Growers and Exporters Association is preparing to disseminate mush-growing techniques in Ayeyarwady and Bago regions. It is also planning to air mushroom growing techniques in cooperation with SkyNet Media. At present, Myanmar still lacks the technology to export fresh mushroom and is only exporting dried ones.
